This is, of course, a disgusting slur on my character
as if I'd ever sink so low or be so desperate as to do anything as unpleasant as that.

You should try it
things in the foreground go all blurry if they move, and things in the background seem oddly detached from the rest of the image. This is, of course, what action movies have needed for a long time. Plus, for a mere £3 extra for a pair of plastic glasses, you get a free headache.
