I'd actually argue the opposite of that
What the movie industry does best is it takes stories and then hammers all the strangeness out of them until they're as anodyne and samey as all the other movies. People don't pay to watch strangeness, they pay to watch the couple who almost got together at the start of the movie fall out during the middle part of the movie and then get together at the end.
