Sounds like a bunch of hokum made up so that as many men as possible could screw the poor thrall girl. S"Hey, Eric, what shall we do after the Ceremony of the Mystic Door?"

And elaborated by ibn Fadlan's imagination, no doubt. That histories and travelogues need to stick closely to things that actually happened is a comparatively recent idea: European scholars of the time weren't above making things up if they had half a page to fill...
