I was actually forbidden ON PAIN OF DEATH to read it
by my dad, when I was a young impressionable thing. He absolutely railed against it, in a manner reminiscent of the Daily Fail's BAN THIS SICK FILTH. So when I found a copy on his bookshelves, naturally I had to see what was so appalling. I didn't get much past the raping-Arlene bit before I was caught. The book was given a sound thrashing and I was torn up and thrown in the bin.

it's ok
the guy who gave it to me said "don't let it change your life" and guess what? It didn't!
The book itself is well written and entertaining, as I recall. You'd have to be a bit tragic to seriously take it seriously. The coolest thing about is telling other people you have read it.
OTOH, Fear and Loathing in las vagas really is a book to live your whole life by.
