Apparently its because they don't disperse at all as they pass through the waterInstead remaining as bubbles until they reach the surface and break, generally only a foot away from your nose. You're smelling almost unsullied fart at that point due to the reduced fart-nose bridging distance..
In standard conditions, a fart would dissipate into the atmosphere, mingling with the air, well before it reached your nostrils, thus providing a diluted aroma.
Apparently, anyway, not that I've read about it or nowt.
