PardonI refuse to say the phrase 'pardon me?' if I fail, as I often do, to hear something. It just smacks of the bourgeoisie. I'll say 'what?' and mean it.

I tend to say "sorry?" when I'm trying to be polite. It's a compromise.

It infuriates me...When people mutter and mumble and expect you to do all the listening. They're the inefficient communicators, but you're supposed to apologise or compromise? No, it's a firm 'what' and me silently trying to hypnotise the buggers in my one-man-knuckle-biting campaign to finally make people speak up...
