I knew it was all over whenthe vast multitude of galaxies exhausted their gas supply for forming new stars, and old stars eventually burnt out, leaving only dust and dead stars. The universe became quite dark and, as the temperature of the universe approached absolute zero, quite cold.
Or something along those lines.
