As a fat lazy bugger
when I was young, I hated school sports, or indeed any form of physical education (except cricket, because I was good at that and could hit boundaries to avoid running too much!)

Until one year when I had a teacher who took an interest in me, and encouraged my slothful self to take an active part in the football game or whatever. Then I found myself actually enjoying it.

Good teachers can and do make a difference.
