It is expensivebut I've lived in London for 8 years, and have been to expensive places, cheap places, etc. no one's ever tried to charge me £5.50 for a pint. You must have been in somewhere especially ridiculous.
I'd say the Central London average nowadays is probably around £4.10 for decent lager, £3.80 for bitter.

In central London yesI've been to quite a few pretty ordinary pubs where they have charged stupid money. Not everywhere but it's becoming a lot more common
