Hamsters do not hibernate as suchbut go through a similar state when the temparture drops, sorry to give you the bad news but he may well have been alive. We used to see our hamsters dormant in the cage and then tip whisky onto our finger tips and stick it under their nose. I dread to think the amount of hamsters that have been buried alive. I guess a fire is probably a better way to go....
