This is a question Moving home

"Moving house is one the more stressful moments in life," claims Social Hand Grenade. What horrible things have happened to you as you shift your black bin bag of undies from one hovel to the next?

We moved house last March.
I booked Pickfords for 8.00 am, everything was packed and ready to go.

At 7.45 my very stressed wife got a phone call from the van driver. Our road was quite narrow, only room for one vehicle to pass at a time. I had tried to block enough space for him to park outside, using my bike and car, but he couldn't get the van into the space.

He told my wife he couldn't get into the space, and this would be a big problem.

My wife, being a fiery latino, took the very sensible decision to ask (in so many words) what the fucking hell she was supposed to do about it.

Van driver not unexpectedly said 'Nothing, don't worry about it', and pissed off. Pickfords again not unexpectedly then told us their van drivers weren't there to be shouted at, and cancelled the move altogether.

Luckily we found a company who managed to send a bunch of people with a couple of smaller vans, who did it all that day, but for a while I was pretty much ready to start a divorce.

Prickfords richly deserved any deposit that you paid.

They refunded it.
And we got to keep all the boxes they sent as beforehand.

There was a fairly good argument that they'd sent a way bigger van than could fit in the road. I think they understood that.

So... what the fucking hell WAS she supposed to do about it?

Even worse, Pickfords had sent someone to 'survey' the place beforehand, and I had talked about space with
him.

They sent one of those huge removal vans, there was never a chance they'd have got it parked anyway.

The problem was my wife gave the driver an easy let off.

"my wife gave the driver an easy let off"
Is that what they're calling it these days?

Maybe if she had,
I wouldn't have had to carry two fucking sofas through a very narrow hallway myself.

yeah yeah "narrow hallway" we get it...

Hah.
Yes, good point. Schoolboy error there.

Latina. She's definitely female.

You're lucky
Pickfords came and did our move; moving out was fine, but the team that turned up to move our furniture into the new house were terrible, they broke a doorframe because they couldn't be arsed to carry the sofa round to the garden doors and take it through that way, broke the TV stand, dented a load of walls, smashes several bits of china, dropped my husbands PC and knackered it and were generally shit. And they only offered us £25 for the whole lot because my husband failed to put in the insurance claim before the end of 7 days, even though the door frame was marked on the sign off form. I think your wife saved you a world of pain there.

It did actually work out OK.
The guys we got were rough and ready, drove the worlds oldest clapped out luton vans, but they worked like slaves, didn't so much as scratch a single thing.

Worked out about 200 quid cheaper as well, including a decent tip at the end of the day.
