I used to live next door to a pair of elderly naturists, only finding out about their hobby when they bade me a cheerful, saggy 'Hello' while I was 25 feet up a ladder repairing the chimney. Luckily, a bush broke my fall, but the memory of a fat, naked man in an ill-fitting wig will live with me forever.

Well played to your younger sister!
And as the old adage goes (though not completely apt here), if you lend someone £20 and never see them again, it was probably worth it.

very true
i've never seen him since, but i ran into jenny recently. she and her new partner have 2 kids, which she would never have had if chris hadn't forced her to dump him by beating her so badly she ended up in hospital.
or so she says, i never once saw him raise even a finger to her. if he'd hit her, the walls were thin enough for me to have heard.
