If you're at a terrible restaurant
and leave without paying, that's a criminal offence.

However, if you pay a sum equivalent to what you feel was a reasonable value for the meal, and leave your details, that is merely a civil matter. The restaurant may attempt to sue for the shortfall, but - in fairness - it's unlikely to be worth their while.

This may turn out to be complete fiction - I await correction by m'learned Wormulus; but I think it's true.

Mrs V and I have done our fair share of bad restaurants.

The curry house in Butler's Wharf, London, is awful - we were waiting 45 mins to order drinks, and then Mr Money comes in, sits on his own next to us, and has four staff waiting on us and is served his scran before we'd even got our wine.

We took the bottle and did one, and they tried to charge us for service (which I instructed them we'd not be paying in no uncertain terms).

I HATE bad service in restaurants - ruins the night.

We did this after terrible service
Paid for the food we got ok, refused to pay the proportion that was extremely late, cold, or otherwise unsatisfactory.

The manager huffed out and tried to argue the toss. Unfortunately for her, one of our crowd was a professional deal-negotiator, and had haggling skills that she couldn't dream of. I think we got the bill down even further, after he'd talked it through.

After realising that we were not going to budge, she told us we were banned - which caused much derisive laughter, as we gleefully - and very publicly - told her how much we wouldn't want to come back.
