They lived on a staircase?
It's so sad to hear this. Were they both ex-servicemen who couldn't adjust to life outside the forces? Perhaps they had problems at home, or substance abuse issues?

It's very easy to laugh at the homeless, and to wee on them in their little carboard forts, or even set them alight when you've had a few beers - but they're people just like you and me.

(well, not like me, obviously, but you know what I mean)
