When I first arrived in China
I was teaching in a university, and was to begin with the only foreigner there. A month later, a guy from New York turned up; I was so glad to meet another western person that I made the classic mistake of acting all pally before I'd even sussed him out. He turned out to be ridiculously cheap, like some absurd Jewish stereotype: he used to hang around the canteen waiting for someone to buy him lunch; he asked some students (mostly children of peasant farmers etc) to help him buy a cellphone; they took him to a mobilephone shop, helped him pick one out and then he said "So are you guys going to help me pay for it?"; he once invited a student locked out of his dormitory (doors closed at 11) to stay at his apartment, then didn't offer him any food while he filled his own face; when we went to a bar, he didn't take enough money. He wore a woman's jacket during the winter.

God, I hated him. Schmuck.
