Surely the very easiest thing to dowould be to ask your host if they require any donations in the way of food, pudding, booze etc? I am sure they would appreciate you asking even if they don't want you to bring anything.
I find that turning up clutching a cheap bottle of wine and a nice looking cake will get you fed and drunk for the evening no matter what the house rules are.
