Satellite 1 locates the target and sends data to satellite 2which drops a rod. By the time it gets to Earth, it's travelling at 7000 miles an hour and hits with the force of a meteor. All the fun of a nuke without the awkward radioactive fallout.
They've decided to call it Rods of God. Which just sounds like a nob gag to me.
