I'm in Beijing. Having a baby here should be alright, you can get an ayi (housekeeper/nanny) for quite cheap, though you have to keep your eye on them to begin with. Hospitals are alright, but I wouldn't send a kid to school here - international schools are massively expensive (up there with UK private schools). I have a 5-month old daughter and not had any problems.
