I love Edinburgh.My grandparents lived in Costorphine and I used to go there every Easter & Summer.
There plenty of work opportunities there- Standard Life, Widows etc. If not in the 'Burgh, then Glasgow is easily commutable.
What does your wife do? I'm sure a highly paid marketing exec like you could find work there easily enough, it's not just Scotland's professional sector that's based there, there are loads of peripheral service industries too.
