you canget the california zephyr train from chicago to SF. apparently one of the best ways of seeing the states.
incidentally if anyone does fancy Chicago as a holiday destination, october is by far the best month. The summer is stupidly hot, and from the end of novemvber till march is unbearably cold. october is perfect.
