The hunger games is based on this, as is the latest predator movie
and there has been a few low budget remakes

Based loosely yes
Just like the seven samurai and the magnificent 7, the reason they didn't make a "battle royale" remake was because it was too similar to the hunger games

The Magnificent 7 was actually based on Seven Samurai, its a relling of the same story
Whereas Hunger Games just has some similarities and they're really not that similar when you watch them side by side. Yes They are not currently making a remake because the hunger games was similar but apparently the author of the hungers games had not seen Battle Royale and similarities are coincidence. Either way, loosely based does not make it a remake. as far as I am aware there are no actual remakes of Battle Royale nor do there need to be, its only 13 years old and was done pretty well first time round.
