Buttered kittenswould not need to be attached to anything, if you strapped magnets to them. Then if they rotated inside a coil of wire you could extract the energy (this would work perfectly if you ignore the fundamental law of conservation of energy)
It would probably constitute kitten abuse though, which I don't agree with.
