It's a scalar quantity but you still need a reference frame. For example I'm sitting here at my desk, and my speed relative to the earth is essentially zero. But relative to the sun, I'm hurtling round at thousands of miles per hour. And because the earth is orbiting the sun in a roughly circular manner, that means we're continually accelerating towards it, so are experiencing a velocity change, because of the change in direction.
In space, what would your reference point be? The surface of the earth? And if so, which point? Yes it can make sense under certain circumstances, but in Armageddon it just didn't!
