It depends where you areI've had beer a plenty and not been asked for ID, i've gone to my local liquor store and been ID-ed, on a second occasion the guy just put "1985" as my birthdate.
The there was one memorable occasion in LA where they wouldnt take my passport as ID as it didn;t have my height and weight on it. Go figure. You can find the full transcript on The "Barred" QOTW best of page. :)
I didn't get wine in the end, but may well make up for it this evening.
