I seem to remember another time you said you hadn't got dressed, and I assumed you were therefore unclad. So I thought I'd make the same poor joke twice.

Seriously though, it's the bit which connects the steering rod to the wheel, to allow you to turn corners. Because it's a balljoint and transfers quite a lot of force it wears out after a while (in this particular case about 15000 miles, cos my car's crap, but usually 100000 miles or so) and has to be replaced.
