One morning my mother woke up and went downstairs and found a guy passed out on the sofa. She woke him up and he was very embarrassed to discover he had drunkenly walked in to the wrong house. My mum had left the door unlocked and the guy had been staying with a mate nearby and had tried the door, assumed his mate had left it open for him and passed out on the sofa.

My mum being my mum made him a cuppa. 15 years later they are still mates. When I told this story to an American friend at uni they said "Oh, he'd be dead in our house. We wouldn't have woken him up, we would have shot him" I am still shocked at how she said this, not at the death penalty for trespassing bit but just the level of fear some Americans must live in to consider killing someone for entering their property.
