A mate of mineswitched to 3. It's crap round here. It only works properly in cities, where there's good 3G coverage, and out in the country it's supposed to default to 2.5G and piggyback onto T-Mobile or whoever, but it doesn't work very well.
Phoning from other networks shouldn't be a problem though. My free minutes on Vodafone allow me to call any UK landline or mobile, regardless of network. Maybe PAYG phones are different, but if you're spending that much you'd be better with a contract anyway.
