in the bad old days of the 1980's, there were a number of 'Crews' in dirty aul Dublin town who used to meet up down alleyways, break open finagled cardboard boxes, spread them about and have 'Beatdowns' where one 'Crew' would compete against the other to the soundtrack you described above played through whatever means of playing music was available. Sometimes, a skinny white kid would even 'beatbox'. I was barely a child watching them and could never decipher how they decided who won but at the time, it seemed impossibly cool. It was possibly, crap, of course and nothing like the kind of shenanigans you see nowadays.
I was in St Michelle in Paris earlier this year and saw the most acrobatic feats of breakdancing being performed by baggy-panted Africans to the accompaniment of an enormous 'Ghetto Blaster' reminiscent of 'Radio Raheem' (see Spike Lee's 'Do The Right Thing'.
It was way cooler.
