If it didn't ask if you'd like to recover the documentwhen you opened Excel again, it's probably gone. I'm no expert any more, but it might be worth searching the drive for *.xls and seeing if the most recent document has a tilde (that little wavy line my bastard phone doesn't appear to have) at the start. If it does, try opening it... It might be a temporary file.
This goes back a few years so I openly accept if I'm parsecs behind modern technology.
