If I'm with other adults I might have one beer or a glass of wine, but if I'm on my own with her then I don't.It's not exactly a hardship, given I can have beer when she's not with me (subject to work, driving etc.) pretty much whenever I like.

Fair point. It's probably more the fact that I think I would need a drink to cope with the responsibility of looking after a small person as I'm wildly irresponsible and a fool.(

Whilst they don't arrive with an instruction manual, it isn't difficult; keep them safe, keep them fed & watered, have fun with them to keep you both entertained, do things to educate them, discipline when necessary. People have been doing so for millions of years, if it was that difficult the human race would have become extinct.
