Means you can set any speed you like, not just go between 33, 45, 78 etc.

Because at the time it was common for classical records to be pressed badly, and off key. So by speeding up or slowing down the record you could correct the pitch.
Hence varispeed often being referred to as 'pitch correction'.

as "78-ish, or thereabouts". If my maths is right, my turntable can correct up to a speed of about 85.

CDJs can keep the pitch locked and just increase tempo.
