Instead of a drive belt, the motor drives a wheel that in turn spins the platter.

No gears, the speed's set by a lever that pushes the wheel further out towards the edge of the platter.
Means you can set any speed you like, not just go between 33, 45, 78 etc.

I heard that technics added pitch control on the sl mk 2
Because at the time it was common for classical records to be pressed badly, and off key. So by speeding up or slowing down the record you could correct the pitch.

Hence varispeed often being referred to as 'pitch correction'.

Yeah, as I understand it, records labelled as "78" were pretty often more accurately described
as "78-ish, or thereabouts". If my maths is right, my turntable can correct up to a speed of about 85.

anything melodic sounds shit past about +/- 4.
CDJs can keep the pitch locked and just increase tempo.
