I'm not a Dylan fanso I can't really speak with a lot of authority, but it seems that every one of his songs I've heard and liked came from his early work. (A quick glance through Wikipedia shows that they're all from the first six albums, for what that may be worth.)
I prefer Tom Waits for twisted beauty, myself...
