It has long been my opinionthat Douglas Adams was essentially ripping off Pratchett, only not doing it as well.
The thing about Pratchett is that you have to be fairly familiar with England and English culture to fully appreciate him- so to the average American, he's a bit confusing. But to those of us who've learned something of Old Blighty, he's hilarious.
