Yes. In a word. Yes.
August is a bit of a 'mare for those of us who call this old town home. If you can get here another time, actually May is good.
Statistically, August is our wettest month of the year, and May is usually the driest! I can't remember how I know that, but that amount of the wet stuff that's fallen this month convinces me it's true!
Plus, all the hotels and B&Bs fill up pretty quick in August and charge full rate. Better chance of a last minute bargain in off season. If you don't mind the cold, December's usually excellent as there's a lot on in town (funfair on Princes Street, ice rink in the shadow of the Castle etc).
Anything you need to know, give me a shout - always happy to boast about my town!
Edit: just re-read your request - first two weeks in July are the local "trades" fortnight and the start of our school holidays. This means that local attractions can be a bit busy, but nowhere near as bad as August. I don't do the Festival I'm afraid.
