As a native
For a stunning curry go to the Spice Merchant in Cardiff Bay.
Fine dining, try Gilbys at the Bay or at Culverhouse cross
Chinese go for the all you can eat menu at the Fortune House on Salisbury road.
For burgers, go for Eddies in the Bay where you will also find Harry Ramsdens.
For the more active, the new olympic size and adjoining lesuire pool with flumes etc has recently opened in the International Sporsts village
Cardiff bay is aslo a good place to start the tourist thing. Lots to see, Dr Who exhibition, Lightship, water tours around the bay, loads of good bars, bistros etc and a funfair ride or two.
Cardiff castle might be worth a look at if you like that sort of thing, the shopping (so the wife and neices) tell me is superb in the centre and its always worth seeing if there are any late availability tickets for whats on at the millenium centre.
