@TGBI know what you mean but I have absolutely no idea what they're called. It's a series of straight lines, but their crossing points describe a curve, the accuracy of which improves the more lines you have.
In the 1970s it was fashionable to make them using coloured thread wrapped round panel pins on a black board.
Edit - I like the OCT 31 one. Hadn't heard that before.
