Sonic booms aren't a single event, but a rolling phenomenon that is generated for as long as an object maintains supersonic flight
resulting in a Mach cone originating at the nose and flight surfaces. The boom is heard where the edges of the Mach cone pass over an observer, being the leading edge of the shockwave.
