Saab 9-3 Sportwagon? It's got the GM/Fiat diesel which is rather nice, although allegedly they go pop at about 80k, come loaded with kit, and have the world's comfiest seats. Loads of specialists around to service them as the dealer network is teeny, and as it's generic GM bits, the parts aren't as horribly expensive as they were when I had a 900.

Just do not ever buy new - the depreciation is scary.

Eds: Japanese and diesel? The problem is they have tended to make such efficient petrol engines that you have to do some serious miles to earn back the price differential, hence nobody bothered with the old Toyota diesels until they brought in the D4D.
