ChickenladyCouldn't agree more about the smugness. It was extremely infuriating as I felt it let down what had been a thoroughly enjoyable read up until then. The film, however, didn't have that. If anything it underplayed that final twist which made it all the more startling (and enjoyable).
Have you read the Boy in the striped pyjamas? I just saw an advert for that the other night which I didn't expect. Apparently it's not too good.
