Tungsten carbideis used on drills to improve the longevity of the bit, as it's much harder than steel.
It's not as hard as diamond though. I thought it was harder, hence my comment above, but I just looked it up.
Edit@HLT - Oh, I see. My Python knowledge is lacking that particular sketch.
