Dirty WeekerI can recommend Eon by Greg Bear and its sequel, the name of which escapes me right now. Sort of sci-fi without being up its own arse, kept me glued to the pages... not in the adult novel sense of the phrase.
Edit: actually, having re-read your list, this is probably way off the mark. But I still recommend it :)
