A manual gearbox that could take the torque without breaking would have a clutch so heavy that it'd be almost unusable in real life - at least that is my understanding from the retail end of the business.
I'm thinking specifically of the Viper and 850i: the Viper was like driving a very frisky tractor.
Most 'modern' autoboxes will have some sort of manual over-ride (steptronic/sequentronic/bananatronic) plus all sorts of adaptive electro-gimmickry to make it feel like a manual drive when it isn't.
Don't even get me started on Automatic Clutch System or similar. Ptooie.
