I once
fell asleep sat down, with my elbows resting on my knees and my hands supporting my head. When I woke shortly after and stood up, I just fell over. Tried it again and fell over again. My still-fuzzy head couldn't comprehend that my legs had gone numb...
But in answer to your question, I'd guess that we move around loads in our sleep to prevent this, maybe our subconsciousness makes us move when it feels pain we can't recognise because we're asleep. (Purely a guess and has no scientific theory in it!)
