Science trivia -

The original name of aluminium, given to it by Humphry Davy, was alumium. However, the use of aluminum then became popular, but the IUPAC eventually adopted the spelling aluminium, as it used the -ium ending of many other metals: potassium, sodium etc

However, the aluminum spelling had become commonplace in the US by this point and it stuck.
