If you can get it, try Devil's Rock.
OK, so it's German, and OK, it's a Riesling (the combination of which would usually have me running to the hills screaming "BUT IT'S SHIT! ALL GERMAN WINE IS SHIT!"), but by crikey is it lovely and a snip at £4.99 a bottle.
Otherwise, if you can get a White Rioja (usually around a tenner for an average one), you're made.
Other than that, anything really from New Zealand's North Island is a winner (if you can spalsh out £20 go for a Cloudy Bay then go for it, although it's a bitch to get hold of).
California is starting to churn out some very drinkable whites now, just avoid their Chenins. And two buck chuck. NEVER drink two buck chuck.
Finally, for a cheeky red, try a Chilean Tarapaca. Lovely.
