@SamI'm not too bothered about the V8 thirst. I'm used to that - my daily driver is a 4.2 supercharged V8 :)
The TD5 is an utterly mental engine, and very, very tuneable. It's essentially a 5-cylinder version of the highly underrated Rover L-series. It just hasn't got the V8 soundtrack though :(
EDIT: That Merc. It's a W124 300D. As in, as rare as a Defender 50th. Buy it. NOW.
