edit: I've just remembered an ampersand related story! Back when I was first working, we had a crappy dictating system and the letters were typed in the typing pool then collected by juniors. My boss used it constantly, and would punctuate with "ampersand" or "semi colon" where appropriate. Until a new typist didn't understand that he meant the symbol, and typed the whole word. His face was a picture.
