@fuzzyPumpkin? Too new-fangled and American for me. When I was a lad, we carved out swedes (the vegetables, not the people!) for lanterns.
Hard work it was too. They're not soft like pumpkins, but hard, tough vegetables. Character building, that was!
The house used to stink of burnt neep for days if we lit the candle and put the lid on.
