Definitely new strings!You know the story of Pink Floyd's "One Of These Days", don't you? The reason that one bass sounds rather dull compared to the other is that it had old strings on it. They sent out a roadie to get new strings, but he elected to go visit his girlfriend for the weekend instead, so they had to record it with old strings.
Re-string the guitars! It will pay off!
