Yep some people are generations away from thsoe affected in the war. Anyway I always think of the Kinks album Arthur, or more precisely the song "Some Mother's Son" which contains the lyrics:
Some mothers son lies in a field
Back home they put his picture in a frame
But all dead soldiers look the same
While all the parents stand and wait
